We’re continuing our handmade Christmas gift ideas, we’ve got another one from director Lesley and her take on the Wheat Bag from Juliette Goggin and Abi Righton’s book ‘Handmade Spa’ it is full of inspirational ideas & tempting recipes.
This one is particularly good if you have any last minute gifts, a secret santa that may have slipped your mind, or just a little something extra for Aunty such & such who has a sore neck…! As always, if you’ve had a go at any of our recipes, please leave us a comment below, we’d love to hear how you got along!
‘I thought I would use some lavender to make wheat bags for the first time, we always have plenty in stock. I raided my fabric stash and used some plain fabric for lining the bags. I used some barley and also risotto rice from my kitchen cupboards. I mixed in lavender flowers to a similar proportion as the book recommends with the wheat and rice and then added lavender essential oil, just ¼ to ½ a teaspoon in a mixing bowl full was plenty. (Use your own personal preference here, some people prefer a more subtle or a stronger scent)
I used the recommended dimensions for the eye mask and warming pack for which I chose floral fabric. Then I used up some pieces of quilted free motion stitching samples (that I had competed in a workshop) to make up wheat bags to my own size, including a mini one which could also be used as a lavender bag.
I like using natural fabrics so used cotton and linen pieces and added a personal touch with my handmade labels.
I am pleased with the results and intend to give my wheat bags as gifts, I will attach a handwritten label with directions to use. I haven’t used one yet as I haven’t needed to but I have felt very relaxed inhaling the lavender fragrance as I worked. I would thoroughly recommend the book as it is full of lovely ideas.’
