Lyral & Lilial Ban in Cosmetics & Toiletries
With the Lyral & Lilial Bans now in place we wanted to provide you with all the information we have regarding these two ingredients. There have been changes in the cosmetic regulations, as of 23rd August 2019 the fragrant compound Lyral is no longer acceptable for use in bath and body products. As with Lilial these ingredients are used in a lot of fragrances. Lilial also underwent different EU regulatory processes under the EU CLP and Cosmetics Regulation and became banned in 2022. If you have any questions about the Lyral & Lilial Ban please email enquiries@thesoapkitchen.co.uk.
Why is Lyral & Lilial banned from Cosmetics?
Firstly, we found out why; these changes are due to recent consumer experiences; where 1-3% of people have suffered a reaction when using products on their skin that contain these ingredients.
When did Lyral & Lilial get banned from bath and body products?
Lyral also known as Hydroxyisohexyl 3-Cyclohexene Carboxaldehyde and Lilial, also known as Butylphenyl Methylpropional are both banned. So any cosmetic products placed on the market now need to comply with the ban. This means that all non-compliant products must be withdrawn from the market. Any leftover stock needs to be destroyed appropriately or used by you. If this ban affects you in any way, you will need to contact your safety assessor. If you have a CPSR in place with us, please email enquiries@thesoapkitchen.co.uk.
Where is Lyral & Lilial used?
A lot of our fragrances used both Lyral & Lilial as an ingredient. The information for this can be found in the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) or the Allergen Documents. At The Soap Kitchen we underwent a vigorous process to review all fragrances. This was to ensure we replaced any fragrances affected, with as close to a replica as possible. With our full fragrance range now being Lyral & Lilial free.
Who is affected by the Lyral & Lilial ban?
The Lyral & Lilian Ban, is only applicable to bath and body products and doesn’t apply to wax. This means it won’t affect candles and wax melts. However, as we made the changes to suit the new regulations we wanted to be able to stay available to both candle makers and bath and body makers. Which is why we made the decision to have a full Lyral & Lilial free fragrance range.
