- A large mixing bowl
- Kitchen scales
- Large tub or lidded bucket (to hold all of the mixture)
- A small glass jar/bottle with lid
- A clean, empty bottle/jar (for decanting as required)
Measure out the epsom salts, sea salt and SLS noodles into the tub or large wide-necked bottle/jar.
Calculating the total weight of the mixture, measure out 2% in weight of your chosen essential oil/s or fragrance into the small jar/bottle, shaking if they need mixing. (It is worth remembering that the volume and weight of these ingredients correspond quite closely, so 200g of the mixture will also fill nearly exactly 200ml in volume, so for every 100g of mixture, use 2ml of essential oil/s or fragrance).
Next, mix the essential oil/s or fragrance/s into a small amount of cornstarch or tapioca starch to make a dry powder and add to the mixture, mixing in very well.
Next, if desired, colour can be added. Colours that work well in this mixture are ultramarines and oxides as they are dry powdeers, so you have an immediate choice of pink, blue, green or violet. These are added a little at a time and mixed thoroughly until the desired shade is achieved. Other colours that work well are many of the powdered dyes such as Amaranth red, FCF blue, Tartrazine yellow and Sunset yellow, which come as powders but should be diluted in a little water, then mixed into a small amount of cornstarch or tapioca starch into a dry powder before being added a little at a time, mixing thoroughly, until the desired shade is achieved. When using diluted dye powders, be careful to minimise the water dilution as too much can make the salts ‘damp’. The SLS noodles will not take up colour as well as the salts, expecially the powdered colours, so the final appearance of these bubbly salts will show the SLS noodles fairly clearly, but this makes them a little ‘different’.
Leave the mixture to stand for at least a day for the fragrance to thoroughly permeate all the salts.
Using a large funnel or suitable utensil, you can now decant a little at a time into a suitable bottle or jar for using as you please.
