Equipment
• Two Saucepans (good sized stainless steel or enamel)
• Measuring Jug (glass or plastic, to with stand boiling water)
• Accurate Scales
• Whisk
• Spatula
• Soap Mould
• Eye & Hand Protection (safety glasses and rubber gloves)
• Blanket or Large Towel
Ingredients
• 454g Olive Oil (Pomace)
• 321g Clean, Cold Water
• 200g Coconut Oil
• 120g Shea Butter
• 115g Sodium Hydroxide
• 84g Flax Seed (Linseed) Oil
• 25g Banana Powder
• 25g Fine Oats (Oatmeal)
• 2g Ground Cinnamon
• Jumbo Oats
Method
Step 1
Firstly create your Lye, and suspend it in your prepared cold-water bath. I hang the jug handle over the side of the bowl.
Step 2
While your lye cools, measure out your shea butter and coconut oil into your saucepan. Gently melt it on the stove. Don’t overheat it, just melt it. When there are tiny pieces of solid oil still left to melt, remove from the heat. Leave until completely liquid. If adding grapefruit seed extract, add it to the saucepan now.
Step 3
Then measure out your olive oil and flax seed oil into your other saucepan and pour in your combined shea butter and coconut oil.
Step 4
Once the lye has cooled and is roughly the same temperature as the melted oil, slowly and carefully pour the lye into the oils. Start stirring with a balloon whisk to ensure the mixture all starts to chemically react and combine.
Step 5
You should stir the mixture fairly briskly. You will notice the solution start to turn more opaque and as the minutes pass it will start to thicken. Once you reach a very light trace, add in your oats and gently mix until evenly dispersed.
Step 6
Next stir in your banana powder and cinnamon powder. Ensure no lumps have formed and all your ingredients have blended evenly.
Step 7
When you are happy pour your soap mix into your soap mould.
Step 8
Decorated accordingly; as our soap thickened we used our spatula to create subtle lines and sprinkled oats down one side of our bar.
Step 9
When you are happy with your design leave your soap to cure. We left ours uncovered but wrapped at the sides. This is because we thought any soda ash on top would add to our final look.
Step 10
After roughly 24-48 hours you can cut your soap into bars. Then you need to leave it to finish curing, this takes 3-4 weeks. Once cured you can enjoy your Banana, Oats & Cinnamon Soap!
